Introduction & welcome

Dear newsletter reader,

With this first newsletter from the Hearing at Home (HaH) project we would like to show you the goals and achievements of the project so far and give you a quick glimpse on the upcoming developments. In this issue we provide you with a short overview about the full project followed by some technical facets which have been worked on during the first year of HaH. The newsletter will be published twice a year, future issues will focus on specific topics that are addressed in HaH.

We encourage you to send us feedback on our newsletter, and we certainly very much welcome discussions on both technical issues of the HaH project as well as on market opportunities.

Enjoy reading this newsletter.

Kind regards,

Jochen Meyer

project achievements

The HaH project started very well. Among others, the first user requirement analysis carried out in work package 3 showed that the HaH technology will be accepted by most users and also pointed out topics to focus the project work on.

Work package 4 (Home Information and Communication [HIC] development platform) defined the initial interfaces and the initial hardware setup for the HIC development platform. Thus the work in the R&D in the other work packages on Synface, the algorithms with its respective fitting procedures and the home automation integration based on the platform could be started and are now performing. First results and definitions can be found in the respective first deliverables. The most outstanding results are published in public deliverables, which can be found on the HaH website.

First results can be summarized as follows: The noise reduction algorithms (global Supportive Audio Signal Processing [gSASP], work package 6) have been specified, the initial self-fitting algorithm (individual Supportive Audio Signal Processing [iSASP], work package 7) has been evolved on the basis of an extensive literature study. The home automation workpackage (work package 8) started specifying the needed components, their interaction and the responsibilities amongst the partners. The Synface (work package 5) lip reading support is going to support German language and a special Dutch version has been released. For further information on the work packages please go to:

Based on dissemination and exploitation activities, the visibility of the project is very good. Among others, an information flyer for interested companies and people has been created and is available under

The HaH project was presented at various events and also attended (for its third time) the concertation meeting in Brussels where we presented the upcoming workshop in Madrid (2007-12-14). On this workshop the projects ASTRALS and HaH tried to figure out how the results from ASTRALS can be used in HaH. The ASTRALS project ends at the beginning of 2008, so that different technologies (home automation and Audio/Video [A/V] delivery) exist which propose to enhance the HaH HIC platform.
